Chapter Twenty
The phone rang.
Dante sat up, blinking. He'd slept deeply for perhaps the first time in five years, and his mouth felt a little sandy. There had been no attack, not even a ripple against the traps he'd set.
He heard her, then. It hadn't taken very long for him to be attuned to the sound of her voice, even upstairs in her bedroom, with its unmade bed, stacks of books scattered everywhere, and the ficus tree in her window growing green and healthy. Last night he had touched the sheets, wondering if she slept with that silk dress against her skin.
"Hello?” She sounded sleepy, and he heard her moving, sitting up in bed, sheets sliding against each other.
He pushed the blanket he'd taken from the closet aside and swung his feet down to the wooden floor. There was silence upstairs. She must be listening to the person on the other side of the phone.
"Oh, no,” she said, quietly. “What does the doctor say?"
Another long pause. “All right,” she said. “I'll be there as soon as I can. No, really, Yann, it's all right. I'll be right there. Just let me get dressed and get some breakfast. I'll drive out.” Then he heard her laugh. It was a sad little sound. “I'll bring a friend. She'll like him. No, I don't think so. I'll be there before noon. Um-hmm, good-bye."
He heard her hang up, and she sighed deeply. Then she leaned over, and he heard the sound of a phone dialing. A pause. He kept his eyes closed, imagining her warm and tangled from sleep, yawning delicately. His body rose at the thought and he clamped his control down. “Suzanne? Yes, I'm fine. No, nothing's happened, except that Yann called me. Tina's in the hospital. He thinks this is the last time. Yes, I'm going. Can you get ahold of Elise and have her open the shop? Yes, I'll take him. He slept here. No, on the couch. Suzanne, no. Oh, for God's sake, I'm an adult. Quit it.” She sounded a little more awake. He could imagine her smiling.
What would it be like to wake up to that smile, holding that smile against him?
"No, I'm going to get some coffee, finish some laundry and get dressed. Then I'll go down there.” A long pause. “Really?” She sounded serious, now. Dante shut his eyes and imagined watching her bare pale shoulders covered with her amazing dark hair, playing with a strands of it—imagined letting it slip through his fingers. “Knight of Swords.” His ears perked, hearing that. “Just like the last one,” she said, heavily. “Oh, Suzanne. That's like..."
He heard her get out of bed and pace across the floor. “But it could be something else,” she said. “It could be that he isn't..."
It was frustrating, hearing only one side of the conversation. He walked into the kitchen and looked at her coffeemaker. Well, he could make coffee. It was a fairly simple operation.
There was ground cinnamon scattered around the coffeemaker, and he guessed that she added it to the grounds.
